Eye Injury Prevention & Response

Did you know that nearly 2,000 eye injuries occur in the US every day?

With the proper precautions, almost all of these injuries can be prevented. Shields Save Sight is here to help educate you on the best ways to prevent unnecessary eye injuries, as well as outfit you with the necessary information and resources to safely respond to eye injuries should they occur.

Shielding your eyes is a smart way to prevent injury or damage to sight, which can impact your daily life, relationships and the way you work. In addition, knowing the proper and safe ways to respond to and shield an eye after injury can help you and/or others prevent additional trauma following an event.

Over 90% of eye injuries are preventable IF you…

  • Shield your eyes by wearing appropriate protective eyewear while on- and off-duty, and
  • Make sure that the eyewear is listed on the Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL), approved by the Department of Defense

Do not patch or put pressure on any kind of eye injury.

Instead, shield the eye to protect it from further injury: use or create a rigid eye-shield that makes a dome over the wound and shields against further damage until proper care can be provided to the injury.
