Vision Center of Excellence Worldwide Ocular Trauma Video Teleconference JTS Newsletter

The Vision Center of Excellence (VCE) is a leading advocate for research and treatment for improved vision care and restorative innovations for Service members and Veterans. Through its efforts, the VCE maximizes the potential for effective prevention, mitigation and treatment of injuries and disorders of the visual system, as well as helps to facilitate the identification of research capabilities and initiatives within and between the Department of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA). Critical selection and observation of best practices for improved quality of care through direct application of new techniques has become a hallmark of the VCE. The VCE is proud to be part of the groundbreaking work that the Joint Trauma System (JTS) has performed to date. Through its Weekly Trauma Call, JTS has improved the quality of patient care delivered to our Service members in need.

As imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the VCE has adopted and implemented its own version of what the JTS has successfully developed through the creation of a similar process that includes the ophthalmic, optometric and trauma communities, as well as support organizations from around the world and across the DoD and VA. The VCE’s Worldwide Ocular Trauma Video Teleconference (VTC) is a monthly meeting where providers and support organizations discuss ocular trauma cases from point of injury through the most recent level of care. Global best clinical practices can be shared, as well as the tracking of patients from primary theater injury to final rehabilitation.

Currently, there are over 30 organizations involved that render their expertise to grow the shared information to help alleviate systems issues; identify areas of process, clinical and systems improvement; and identify and develop best clinical practices.
